Vichyssoise soup

Traditional classic onion soup. According to French tradition, the soup is served with a salad of lightly fried shrimp with garlic and finely chopped fennel.

Each of us knows what soup is. Usually soup is consumed for lunch; it is the first course, followed by the main course - the second course. Lately, it has been considered quite acceptable if lunch is limited to soup, which, you see, gives this liquid dish special significance.

We are all accustomed to seeing mainly vegetables in soups - potatoes, cabbage, carrots, beets, as well as meat or meat by-products. Each national cuisine has its own signature soup recipe, which includes its own flavor. Recipes for exotic soups from Asian countries are considered especially “raisin-y.” How do you like... bat soup? Have you tried it? But in vain...

We offer you ten of the most unusual soups in the world, including the strangest ingredients.

1. Kiburu soup, Tanzania

In the African country of Tanzania, at the foot of Mount Kilimanjaro, lives the Chagga tribe, which is very far from the benefits of modern civilization. However, the achievement of local cuisine is considered to be the simplest soup in the world. The Chagga make their living mainly in agriculture; they especially manage to grow bananas and coffee on the infertile African soil; there are also legume plantations here. In fact, this is what they prepare their daily dishes from. Kiburu soup includes a set of simple ingredients - water, beans, bananas and... dirt! Yes, you heard right, it is the addition of the earthy substance that makes the soup salty. And for gourmets, branches of bushes and trees are added to it. Tourists disrespectfully ignore this masterpiece of local cuisine, but for Africans, chagga is a completely ordinary dish, without which they cannot imagine a day.

2. Menudo soup, Mexico

Menudo soup is one of the dishes of traditional Mexican cuisine. Perhaps its composition will not seem so strange to some, but for those who do not like entrails, the soup will be truly exotic. Menudo is made from cow stomachs. In addition to meat, it includes corn, hot chili peppers, cilantro and herbs, as well as Mexican seasonings. This is a traditional “winter” soup, thick and rich, it can be really very tasty. It is especially popular the morning after a stormy New Year's celebration, as a hangover cure. The whole family participates in its preparation, and the beef stomachs are boiled for at least 7-8 hours. As a result, the meat becomes so tender that it simply melts in your mouth. And by adding baked corn tortillas to the soup, you will get a real masterpiece of Mexican cuisine. By the way, menudo soup is traditionally included in the menu of Mexican restaurants around the world.

3. Rooster testicle soup

Rooster testicle soup is common not only in Asian countries, although it came to European cuisine from there. There is nothing unusual in the soup recipe - it is prepared like traditional chicken soup with noodles or noodles, but instead of chicken meat, rooster eggs are added. Gourmets claim that they are much tastier than regular chicken. In taste and consistency, rooster eggs resemble delicate soy cheese tofu, but in a hard skin, like small sausages. Some claim that they are similar to custard. Instead of taking someone’s word for it, try it yourself! Moreover, the main feature of this soup is not only its unusual taste, but also the effect it produces. Rooster testicles, such a rare dish on our table, can increase male potency, have a beneficial effect on the reproductive system, and for women, improve complexion and skin condition.

4. Supu soup, Tanzania

The next soup on our list of the world's most unusual soups again comes from Tanzania. However, this time it is not made from mud at all, but from quite familiar meat products. It’s just that the “component parts” of the animals are truly unusual - the head, heart, liver and lungs of a goat, as well as a cow’s stomach. The name “supu” is translated as soup. And they prepare it not for lunch, as, for example, in European countries, but for breakfast. In addition to meat, vegetables are added to the soup, but not potatoes, cabbage or carrots, but beans and sweet potatoes, which are grown in African countries. “Soupu” has a variety - soup not made from the entrails, but from the hooves of a goat, it is prepared mainly in the northern part of Tanzania. “Supu”, like the Mexican “menudo”, has the ability to significantly alleviate the symptoms of a hangover, but it tastes much less hot and spicy.

5. Bird's nest soup, China

What you definitely haven’t tried as ingredients for soup is bird’s nests. And in China they are used to the fullest! This soup can surprise not only with the products included in it, but also with the cost - a serving of bird's nest soup will cost from 40 to 100 dollars in Chinese restaurants, and maybe even higher. The fact is that the soup is made from the nests of the salangan bird, which is somewhat reminiscent of our swallow or swift. These birds build edible nests using their own saliva as a building material, and place their homes on steep cliffs in Southeast Asia and Australia. One kilogram of bird's nests will cost about 2 thousand dollars. Well-cooked salangan nests taste somewhat like sturgeon caviar; they practically dissolve in the soup, making it look like jelly. Knowledgeable Chinese claim that bird's nest soup improves immunity, has a positive effect on libido, and can even cure asthma.

6. Shirako soup, Japan

As we have all already noticed, in the Land of the Rising Sun they know a lot about food. They know how to cook fish especially well here. Traditional Japanese soup "Shirako" is made from cod milk. Not everyone knows what milk is. So, these are insemination sacs obtained from male cod. They are boiled for a long time in water with the addition of spices until the stew acquires a creamy consistency. Ready “shirako” is seasoned with soy sauce and served hot. In Japan, this is a traditional “winter” soup - rich and aromatic. The Japanese claim that it has an excellent effect on male potency and can cure many diseases of the genital organs, including chronic ones. However, to achieve this goal, Shirako soup must be consumed in large quantities.

7. Deer placenta soup, China

Recipes for the most unusual soups on our list are given at the very end. One of the truly unconventional ingredients for traditional soup is deer placenta, which I successfully use as a food product in China. In addition to deer placenta, the main ingredient, chicken meat, sea mushrooms, edible inflorescences, vegetables and spices are added to the soup. The placenta is a fairly elastic, stringy meat that takes a long time to chew. The taste, according to those who have tried the soup, is quite edible, reminiscent of veal or beef. Deer placenta soup is a fairly standard dish in many Shanghai restaurants. The Chinese claim that by consuming the placenta, one can cure kidney disease, increase immunity, improve skin condition and increase male potency.

8. Bat soup, Republic of Palau

Well, have you waited for the most exotic ingredients? In the island state of Palau, which is located in the Philippine Sea of the Pacific Ocean, bats are successfully used as an ingredient for a very traditional soup! And everything would have been fine if this very mouse had not been dipped into boiling water alive, and what is most terrible - entirely, not even peeled from its skin. If you decide to try a spoonful of this “hellish brew” from a plate with the head of a poor bat sticking out, you will find the taste of the dish to be at least exquisite. This is not surprising - the bat is boiled for several hours in the freshest coconut milk, with the addition of ginger and other spices. For cooking, those types of mice that feed exclusively on fruits are used. When ordering this dish in Palauan restaurants, you will even be asked to choose a male or female.

9. Tiger genital soup, China

And again China surprises us - this is where the real stronghold of exotic dishes and a paradise for gourmets is. If we have long been accustomed to various dishes made from animal genitals, for example, bull eggs, then tiger penis soup may well capture our imagination. On top of that, this is one of the most expensive soups on the planet: to prepare it you need to kill a tiger, and in China this crime is punishable by death! A serving of this soup can cost $300 or more. The history of making tiger penis soup came to the modern culinary world from ancient times. The tiger's penis, like many genital organs of animals consumed as food, has the “magical” power of a powerful aphrodisiac, has a positive effect on potency, and can cure ailments associated with the reproductive system. Before preparing such a soup, the dried tiger penis is soaked for a week (!) in crystal clear water, and then boiled or simmered over low heat for a whole day. Spices and herbs are added to the water, and tiger bones can also be used for the broth.

10. Blood soup, Vietnam

And finally, the most extraordinary soup on our list cannot even be called a soup, because it is prepared from... fresh blood. It is especially appreciated in Vietnam, where this strange recipe comes from. The question arises - did vampires actually originate from Vietnam?.. The soup is prepared from crushed peanuts, herbs and spices, poultry offal and raw bird blood. Most often, geese or ducks are used for cooking. All ingredients are mixed in certain proportions; the soup does not undergo any heat treatment. On the contrary, the finished dish is frozen until the blood acquires a jelly-like consistency, and it is also eaten cold. Gourmets claim that when the blood heats up and becomes liquid, the taste is no longer the same. During the bird flu surge in Asia, blood soup fell out of favor, especially among tourists. However, today there are still extreme sports enthusiasts who want to try it, and local residents eat it regularly.

Since childhood, everyone has been told that soup must be on the daily menu. Whether it's a hot bowl of chicken soup on a cold winter's evening or cold cucumber soup that's nicely cooling on a hot summer's day, whether it's just a first course before the main course or an evening attempt to kill a worm, everything is welcome. There are an incredible number of their recipes in the world - simply tasty or healthy, ordinary and unusual, but there are truly unconventional soups.

In addition to nests, rats, snakes and the most unpredictable parts of other animals are put in soups. Archaeologists believe that the first soup appeared in culinary history in the 6000s BC. and was prepared from hippopotamus. According to Samuel Baker, a 19th century explorer, hippopotamus soup is quite tasty and rich. To prepare it, they took meat, fat and animal skin and cooked it for a long time. And the head, soaked in vinegar, was served with soup. From France to Singapore, there are different recipes for this soup.

This is a favorite soup of the Chagga tribe, whose members live at the foot of Mount Kilimanjaro. The base includes banana and coffee - what is available to them. The third ingredient in the soup is mud, which acts as a seasoning. Making this soup is very simple.

The soup is served throughout the Caribbean, especially in Aruba, where the iguana is simply considered chicken. In addition to meat, it contains a lot of vegetables. The iguana actually tastes like chicken, but it is bony and has scales, but it is considered an aphrodisiac. The fact is that the iguana has two penises, or rather one, but branched.

This soup with a magical name is considered a traditional Chinese dish, exclusive to the southern regions of China, such as Guangdong. But it does not contain the ingredients stated in the name - this is just a metaphor. The soup contains snake meat as a dragon, a civet cat as a tiger, and chicken as a phoenix.

This is a traditional soup of Asian countries. Vietnamese Bloody Soup is made from fresh duck blood, but the weirdness doesn’t end there, as you also need to add the bird’s crop. In order for the blood to clot, it is cooled in the refrigerator, and it is served that way. It is believed that the soup gives strength to both the one who eats it and the one who prepared it.

This is a traditional soup, called "Mexican Soup" in English, which is prepared in a cow's stomach for special occasions, such as to cure a hangover. The main ingredients are cow stomach and corn porridge. The soup is simmered for a long time over low heat and is said to be very tasty due to the tender stomach.

Beer soup is heaven for beer lovers as it is served with bread for breakfast, a symbol of a good day. It was invented in Germany, but over time in the Middle Ages it became popular throughout Europe. The main ingredient in the soup, of course, is beer, to which fried flour is added. However, there are different recipes, some of which also use potatoes.

This soup is popular in the Pacific Islands of Palau. It is prepared from bats, despite the diseases that these animals carry, and coconut milk, in which the animal’s meat is boiled for several hours. Some restaurants offer you to try soup with a bat's head looking out of the plate.

There are many varieties of this dish. Cypriots prepare soup from lamb's head, in Armenia from cow's legs and sometimes heads, in Iran and Azerbaijan - from sheep's heads and hooves, and in Iraq they also add stomach and legs to it. Albanians add the head of sheep, pigs and other livestock. This soup is ideal for the winter season.

The soup is very similar to traditional chicken noodle soup, but uses rooster testicles instead of chicken meat. They are cooked together with vegetables in broth until tender. They are said to have a creamy texture in the soup and are similar to tofu cheese, just with a thick skin. It is believed that the soup has a beneficial effect on the condition of women's skin and male strength.

The soup is similar to the Mexican Menudo soup, the only difference is that different parts of the goat are cooked in the cow's stomach: tongue, heart, lungs, liver and head. If you're lucky, you might find cow hooves and tail in the soup. It is used to cure hangovers and is traditionally eaten for breakfast.

The bull's penis and testicles, known ingredients in all dishes that are considered aphrodisiacs, are placed in the broth to prepare the soup. The bull's genitals are dipped into boiling water, vegetables and spices are added. This soup is popular in Southeast Asia. By the way, in Chinese restaurants this is what they call it - soup No. 5.

Those who cannot afford an expensive exotic soup, but want to try something unusual, can eat chocolate with noodles. A dish from Japanese confectioners Lotte and the Ghanaian chocolate brand is suitable for celebrating Valentine's Day. The dish contains a combination of sweet and salty, chocolate and spices.

Of all the animal genital soups, tiger penis soup is considered the most expensive. It was an exclusive dish in China and was considered natural "Viagra". The tiger's penis was soaked for a week in water and then boiled all day over low heat with spices and medicinal herbs, sometimes tiger bones were added. Even though the tiger is becoming an endangered species, the ingredients can be purchased in Asian markets around the world. Sometimes the corresponding parts of a deer or bull are used instead of a tiger.

As the name suggests, the main ingredient in the soup is turtle meat. This is an expensive and delicious soup that is traditional in some cultures, such as Singapore and the United States, China and East Asia. Green turtles with soft shells are used for it. A variation is Cayman turtle soup, which is prepared in the United States, especially in the south of the country. When consuming such soups, there is a chance of serious poisoning.

Swallow nest soup has always been considered a delicacy and very expensive in China. It is only served in some restaurants. Swallows make a nest using dirt, droppings and their saliva, and this saliva acts as gelatin in the soup.
However, the extravagance of the soup is not the worst thing you can encounter when going on a culinary tour. In some countries they serve

Menudo

This is a traditional Mexican soup that is a very popular dish and is often prepared for holiday dinners. It may seem a little strange to some. It is based on cow's stomach. Preparation takes about 7 hours. First, the meat and cow tripe are thoroughly boiled, then onions, coriander, oregano, chili pepper and hominy are added.

Do you doubt that cow stomach can be tasty? We dare to assure you that combined with the rest of the ingredients and the tender corn tortillas that simply melt in your mouth, it is simply delicious. You can find this amazing dish on the menu of most Mexican restaurants. Menudo is also known as an effective hangover cure!

Kiburu

This is perhaps the simplest soup on our list. Its authors are residents of the Chaga tribe, living at the foot of Mount Kilimanjaro. The main means of livelihood here is agriculture. Mainly growing bananas and coffee. There are no frills at Kiburu. It is made from sweet bananas and beans. The strangest ingredient in it is earth. It supposedly gives the dish a salty taste.

Sapo

This soup is very similar to menudo as it is made from various parts of animals. This is a traditional dish eaten for breakfast in Tanzania. Your plate may contain goat lungs, heart, liver, head, as well as the tongue and stomach of a cow. Particularly lucky ones may even come across tails and hooves. Anyway. Like menudo, sapo is widely known as an effective hangover cure.

Egg soup

It is very similar to our traditional noodle soup, except that instead of chicken meat, white and black chicken eggs are used for the broth, which are cooked with vegetables. Their consistency becomes similar to soft tofu cheese in a hard crust. This dish is known to be very beneficial for women's skin and also adds stamina to men.

"Bird's Nest"

With prices ranging from $30 to $100 per bowl, this Chinese delicacy is one of the most expensive dishes in the world. A kilogram of it can cost up to $2000.

It comes from a nest made almost entirely of bird sticky saliva. When cooked, it dissolves and turns into thick, gelatinous water. This recipe has been used in Chinese cuisine for centuries. As a rule, birds settle in caves and build a nest for about 35 days.

In appearance and density, the houses resemble cement cups. The many health benefits of this dish are known. It is mainly used as an effective remedy for asthma, to increase libido and strengthen the immune system.

Deer Placenta Soup

You can try this soup in Shanghai. It is believed that its use leads to increased potency, improved kidney function and skin rejuvenation. In general, there is some pattern in this. Traditional Chinese culture uses almost all animal organs for food to improve health.

The placenta is the membrane around the embryo through which nutrients are transferred from the mother's body to the fetus's body. Accordingly, it contains a huge amount of beneficial bacteria and is easily absorbed by the body. The placenta is separated from the fetus after it is born. Well, in general, bon appetit and good health!

Shirako or cod sperm soup

Known in the US as Fish Milk Soup and in Japan as Shirako. Essentially, its main ingredients are boiled cod milk. The broth has the consistency of thick cream. In Asian cuisine, milt, like many other parts of animals, is believed to have special properties. Eating them gives you stamina in bed. There is a restaurant in New York that offers it as a special dish.

Fruit soup

This soup is considered a delicacy in the Palauan islands. Although it’s starting to seem to me that all these dishes are created specifically for tourists who, in search of new sensations, are ready to put almost everything that is offered to them into their mouths. There are two species of bats on the island, one is small and feeds on insects, the other is large and fruity. The latter are caught and cooked in coconut milk. Ginger and spices are added to it and boiled for several hours.

In some restaurants, the customer has the opportunity to choose a live mouse before cooking. Many people who have tried this delicacy have said that it is quite tasty, although the furry head of a rodent looking straight at you looks a little scary.

Tiger Penis Soup

There are many soups made from animal penises. But, of course, the dish made from this part of the tiger’s body is the most expensive. In Asian culture, a certain mythical aura has been created around this organ; the properties of Viagra are attributed to it. The dried "dignity" of the tiger is soaked in water for a week, and then mixed with spices and medicines and simmered over low heat for about a day. The cost of one serving can reach $400.

Tigers are endangered and protected animals. But many Asian markets still sell their body parts. If you decide to buy this ingredient, make sure it is genuine. Many shady shop owners often replace it with ox or deer tendons.

Vietnamese blood soup

This Vietnamese dish is so strange that it can hardly be called a soup in the traditional sense of the word. It is made from boiled chicken offal, peanuts, herbs and duck blood. All ingredients are mixed and placed in the refrigerator, the blood coagulates to the consistency of jelly.

It seems to me that only a fairly determined person can eat it. The popularity of this dish has recently declined due to the spread of the bird flu virus. Although, in principle, there is no reason to worry.

Bonus: Soup No. 11

This soup was added as a bonus. “Strong as an ox” is a phrase that attracts lovers of these four-legged mammals with a notorious temperament. In the regions of Southeast Asia, the dish includes onions, carrots, broth, penis and bull testicles. Its properties as an aphrodisiac are widely known.

All products are well doused with boiling water, and then vegetables are added. This dish is completely safe. It is also known that soup made from ostrich eggs is much tastier, but, unfortunately, it is completely devoid of the magical properties of bovine broth.
